Case Title:Amazon Technologies Inc. vs. Lifestyle Equity CV & Anr

Court: Hon’ble Delhi High Court (Division Bench)

In a significant trademark infringement case, Amazon Technologies Inc. had earlier been directed by a Single Judge Bench of the Delhi High Court to pay $39 million (~₹325 crore) to Lifestyle Equity CV, a Netherlands-based company. The dispute arose from allegations that Amazon’s platform had listings infringing upon Lifestyle Equity’s registered trademarks related to a fashion brand.

Lifestyle Equity claimed that third-party sellers were offering infringing products on Amazon India, which not only violated their trademark rights but also diluted their brand reputation in the Indian market.

Amazon challenged the order and filed an appeal before the Division Bench of the Delhi High Court. On review, the Court has granted a stay on the enforcement of the $39 million payment, meaning Amazon will not be required to comply with the earlier order at this stage. The appeal will now proceed on merits.

This case touches on several critical aspects of intellectual property law in the digital era, particularly:

The responsibility of e-commerce platforms for IP violations carried out by third-party sellers
The value of prompt IP enforcement and registration across jurisdictions The importance of brand protection strategy in a cross-border business model
